A dietary supplement is a product that a person takes by mouth, which contains nutritional ingredients meant for addition to the normal diet. These extra nutritional ingredients can include minerals, vitamins, plants, herbs, amino acids, organs, metabolites and glands. Ingredients such as extracts or combinations such as gel soft, liquid, oil, capsules, tablets and powders can also be a food supplement. Dietary supplements can also be found as bars and in other forms but they are classified as food and not as drugs. Food supplements can be classified into the following four classes.

Examples of dangerous food supplements are Ephedra extract. This is generally used for weight loss and energy increase. This causes muscle injury, blood pressure, nerve damage, and loss or memory loss. It is prohibited, but the food supplement containing extract of this herb should not be used.
